The Application of the Arbitrary-Order Galerkin Reduction Method to the Dynamic Analysis of a Rotor With a Preloaded Single-Pad Foil-Air Bearing

Abstract The compressible Reynolds equation (RE) is typically integrated within a fully coupled dynamical foil-air bearings (FABs)-rotor system via spatial Discretization transformation, e.g., finite difference (FD), element (FE). An alternative way of integrating the RE through Galerkin reduction (GR). motivation for using GR computational benefit coming from drastic condensation problem due to elimination two-dimensional grid used air film in FD or FE. This paper presents novel application arbitrary-order both nonlinear and linearized analyses rotor systems supported by single-pad FABs with variable radial clearance (preload). Simulations gave close correlation those all preloads, discrepancies increasing as preload approaches nominal (c). simulations show that has exceed certain level order delay onset instability speed (OIS), significant OIS suppression subsynchronous vibration possible when comparable c. Experimental validation provided.
